Ecclesiazousae, Aristophanes - 31 July & 1 August 2015

Following the defeat of Athens in the Peloponnesian War, corruption and inequality know no bounds. Athenian women, under the initiative of Praxagora, decide to take immediate action. Disguised as men they sneak into the Assembly and assume power. However, their political reforms which focus on sharing property and sexual partners will be undermined by successive tragicomic situations. In his penultimate work, Ecclessiazousae, Aristophanes speaks with bitterness of the impasse that Athens has found itself in, through political satire and a dialogue which manages to be both highly funny and tragic at the same time.
