National Gallery - Myths and Symbols in Modern Greek Art, June 10th 2023 – March 30th 2025

National Gallery Nafplio, Εθνική Πινακοθήκη Ναύπλιο

"Myths and Symbols in Modern Greek Art" (19th -early 20th century) is the title of the new temporary exhibition, that was inaugurated at the National Gallery and Alexandros Soutsos Museum - Nafplio Annex on Saturday, June 10th 2023. The exhibition consists of sculptures, paintings, and drawings.

These sculptures, paintings, and drawings of the temporary exhibition are presented with the aim of highlighting the creativity of Greek artists who adopt, develop, and transform the content and form of myth into new proposals of expression. The exhibition also showcases the diverse visual starting points of the creators.
The reception of myth by Greek painters and sculptors is initially in accordance with the dictates of academic art. However, from the last decades of the 19th century, European Symbolism imparts new dynamics to mythological themes, preparing the ground for the avant-garde artists of the 20th century.
The exhibition aims also, through the educational programs that will be implemented, to decode the symbols contained in artworks with mythological content, as well as to explore the values and messages they convey to us today.
The entire collection of artworks comes from the collections of the National Gallery - Alexandros Soutsos Museum and the E. Koutlidis Foundation, and includes works by the following artists: Ioannis Kossos, Georgios Vroutos, Thomas Thomopoulos, Konstantinos Dimitriadis, Georgios Iakovides, Nikolaos Gyzis, Konstantinos Parthenis, Pavlos Rodokanakis, and Gerasimos Steris.
Alongside this temporary exhibition, as part of the redesign of the permanent collection of the Nafplio Annex of the National Gallery - Alexandros Soutsos Museum, curated by Lambrini Karakourti-Orfanopoulou, focusing on the Greek Struggle for Independence -1821, visitors can also see works by contemporary artists, that engage in dialogue with the 19th-century artworks and enhance the content of the exhibition on a morphological and visual level.
