At the Little Theatre of Ancient Epidaurus, the successful Contemporary Ancients Cycle continues for the fourth year, with two performances in a single evening, in conversation with plays that we will also attend at the Ancient Theatre of Epidaurus: "I, a Servant" by Vangelis Hatzigiannidis, inspired by Euripides' Hecuba, and "Iphigenia / Vora" by Vivian Stergiou, inspired by Iphigenia in Aulis.
At Little Epidaurus, we will also enjoy different types of music, such as classical lieder with our international soprano Mrs. Alexia Voulgaridou, jazz adaptations of Hatzidakis and Tsitsanis by the master of the genre Mr. Dimitris Kalantzis, and a special evening with Eleonora Zouganeli, who will perform popular and traditional repertoire.
In addition, Parodos, the successful inter-artistic research program (studio residency) launched in 2021, continues, with this year's coordinator being the director Simos Kakalas, who will work with young artists on Euripides' Orestes.

This modular stage production is directed by Nikos Hatzopoulos and Ekaterini Papageorgiou. The roles are performed by Filareti Komninou (Me, Her Servant) and Eliza Skolidi (Iphigenia / Prey).
As part of its successful Contemporary Ancients Cycle, this year, the Festival commissions the writing of two theatrical monologues inspired by Euripides’ tragedies to Vangelis Hatziyannidis and Vivian Stergiou. Distinguished both in the field of theatre and prose writing, they deliver works that are both exhilarating and taunting, conversing creatively with the Festival’s major productions at the Ancient Theatre of Epidaurus (Iphigenia in Aulis, Not Hecuba) and subverting the perspective of the tragic heroines with grace and humor.
The roles are performed by Filareti Komninou (Me, Her Servant) and Eliza Skolidi (Iphigenia / Prey).

Dimitris Kalantzis - Masters’ Voice: Manos Hadjidakis, Vassilis Tsitsanis
One of the most creative and highly acclaimed jazz musicians in Greece, with important collaborations in the Greek and international jazz scene, Dimitris Kalantzis weaves with ease among musical genres and is often inspired by the "classics" of Greek music, with three fascinating albums with jazz arrangements of works by Manos Hadjidakis, Mikis Theodorakis, Kostas Giannidis, Kostas Kapnisis, and others.
In the concert at the Little Theatre of Ancient Epidaurus, apart from his excellent work on Hadjidakis, we will have the pleasure of hearing for the first time his own jazz "translation" of songs by Vassilis Tsitsanis. An enchanting personal reading in a harmonious musical dialogue.

Eleonora Zouganeli - On different paths
Eleonora Zouganeli, one of the most significant performers of the new generation, returns to the Festival, after her excellent concert - tribute to Melina Mercouri, which filled the Odeon of Herodes Atticus to capacity in 2014. With an acoustic mood and a band assembled especially for the performance in the stunning Little Theatre of Epidaurus, the charismatic singer will this time wander through the paths of the Greek folk song, starting from Giorgos Mouzakis’ "Monopati", giving new life to select folk and "archontorebetiko" songs under the guidance of the excellent musician Thomas Konstantinou. An evening full of emotion and memories bridging the past with the present.
Happy festival summer!

Did you know that?
The Athens and Epidaurus Festival is Greece’s leading cultural Organization and one of the oldest continuously running festivals in Europe, spanning now 67 years of vivid cultural presence. Theatre director Katerina Evangelatos was appointed Artistic Director in September 2019.
The Small ancient theater of Epidaurus dedicated to Dionysus -which in fact is not small, since it can accommodate 6,000 spectators- was built in the 4th century BC and operated for about 7 centuries. Until 1971 it was buried at a depth of 6 meters, totally covered by an olive grove! Its excavation started by Mrs. Evangelia Deilakis in the beginning of the '70s and proceeded rather slowly...
From Nafplio by car, you can be there within 40 minutes tops (39.14 km).
