Fougaro - A tribute to Marika Ninou, Saturday, July 13th 2024

Fougaro Nafplio fountains

On Saturday, July 13th 2024, the summer Fougaro Art Center hosts, with free admission, a great tribute to the legendary Greek singer Marika Ninou, through her songs and stories, with the voice of Mrs. Katerina Tsiridou and the accompaniment of three other fine musicians.

This emblematic personality of rebetiko, who died prematurely at the age of 35, sealed with her characteristic voice and her performances the so-called "golden age" of this musical genre and influenced the popular song as few artists did afterwards.
Her short life was adventurous and almost novelistic, while what is known about the matriarch of rebetiko is full of mystery, myths, excesses and passions that continue to interest the public and experts to this day, 67 years after her death.
The life of Marika Ninou inspired the script for the 1983 film "Rebetiko" by Kostas Ferris. Manos Hadjidakis, dedicating the album Perix (1974) to her, wrote: "All this work is dedicated to the memory of the incomparable Marika Ninos, who, without knowing it, with the knife of her voice, deeply engraved in us the names of gods of humility and Byzantine decline".
Vassilis Tsitsanis has said, among other things, about Ninou: "She had a special interpretive ability, she had something else. When she sang, she literally captivated people. She sang and even taught along with the singing, like a teacher teaching students. This was innate. She was born for the stage".

Katerina Tsiridou
Katerina Tsiridou has been involved with music from an early age. She is now considered one of the best representatives of rebetiko and traditional singing of her generation.
She has participated in countless events throughout Greece and abroad. Her work is influenced by the global ethnic music scene and she has often experimented with musicians from all over the world during concerts and seminars, presenting rebetiko and Smyrnaiko singing.
From 2013 to 2016 she was a music producer in the First Program of Ert Open channel, presenting a show about folk and rebetiko singing.
She has four personal CDs and many recordings to her credit.
She has performed in many concerts in various countries abroad, playing with Louisiana Red, Jolly Jumper & Big Moe and Bob Brozman in the production of Yannis Angelatos (Operation Passion / Blues and Rebetiko), as well as with the Swedish rebetiko band "Piraeus".
Furthermore, she performed in concerts at the Library of Alexandria, at Town Hall Manhattan in New York and at Berklee University - Performance Center.

Did you know that?
Mrs. Marika Ninou (Evangelia Atamian), the unsurpassed voice who only lived to sing for eight years, was born in 1922 and died at the age of thirty-five, in 1957, struck by cancer. She was the fourth child of an Armenian family, originally from Caesarea in Cappadocia and Sis in Cilicia.
Her longest, and most productive collaboration was with Tsitsanis. She was the muse who inspired him like no other... In 1961, in memory of Marika Ninou, Tsitsanis released the song "I want it to be Sunday" performed by Katie Gray.
Mrs. Katerina Tsiridou is also a writer, with her first attempt at writing being a historical document and album, which presents the life of Marika Ninou, through the testimonies of more than one hundred and fifty people who knew her, while it includes rich photographic and archival material and is accompanied by the presentation of the entire discography of Ninos, along with the labels of her albums.
At the Fougaro Café-Bistrot you can enjoy light dishes of Mediterranean cuisine, coffee, sweets and drinks.
There is a large parking lot available, also with a supply for charging your electric car!
