National Gallery Nafplio - "Karaiskakena, the Legend", Sunday, July 21st 2024

National Gallery Nafplio, Εθνική Πινακοθήκη Ναυπλίου

The beloved Greek actress, writer and director Sofia Kapsourou, winner of the Anatolian International Prize, presents on Sunday July 21st 2024, in the courtyard of the National Gallery of Nafplio, her theatrical monologue "Karaiskakena, the Legend", for a single performance.

During the full moon of July, under the moonlight, the audience will have the opportunity to live a unique theatrical experience. A journey through time, where the present will be in conversation with the years of the Greek Struggle of Independence of 1821 and the first capital of the Greek state will come alive again, through the life of Zoe Diamanto Dimiski, mother of the Commander-in-Chief of the Greek Struggle Georgios Karaiskakis. An antiwar play in wartime. A hymn to woman and her freedom. Karaiskakena, Mother of the hero Karaiskakis, not only gave birth to the Revolution; Karaiskakena is the Revolution.

The play begins with the ultimate twist: in her cell, Karaiskakena the Nun is watching a football match between Olympiacos and Fenerbahce. An ardent fan of Olympiacos, the team whose home stadium is named after her son, the great commander-in-chief of the Revolution, she is well acquainted with the team's history, eternal admirer of the late Thanasis Bempi and his dribble, recounts her life, the difficulties she encountered to raise little George and relives the birth of her son and his death. The race ends with the Greeks winning. Olympiacos scores a goal. Sports is the big winner!

The unconventional and sweeping monologue by Sofia Kapsourou "Karaiskakena, the Legend", directed by Dimitris Karatzias and original music by Manos Antoniadis, with her in the role of Karaiskakena, represented Greece at the International Women Playwrights' Theatre Festival of the Turkish State Theatres in November 2023 and was presented with great success at the iconic Üsküdar Tekel Stage of the National Theatre of Turkey in Istanbul, marking an important and historic moment for the two neighbouring countries.
