Trianon - The Grand Inquisitor, Saturday, July 22nd 2023

Ο Μεγάλος Ιεροεξεταστής, The Grand Inquisitor

After the enthusiastic reviews by the Athenian audience, the theatrical performance of "The Grand Inquisitor" by Fyodor Dostoyevsky continues its spring tour in Nafplio, on Saturday, April 22nd 2023.

Summary
"The Grand Inquisitor" is one of the chapters of the novel "The Brothers Karamazov" by Fyodor Dostoyevsky. Set in a cell in Spain of the 14th century, during the darkest years of the Inquisition, a Jesuit priest will speak out against the arrested Jesus words of great misanthropy, in the name of love for humanity. He accuses Jesus of giving people the gift of freedom of conscience, a gift that in the hands of the weak and depraved, according to human nature, becomes an unbearable burden and transforms into a weapon of destruction.
The only thing left for the High Inquisitor is to take the Purple Robe and the Sword of Caesar and to remove the freedom from humans, so that he can save them from themselves and lead them to happiness. And all this, in the name of love for humanity...
It is the first time in the history of literature that we hear the Authority and the Violence speak, in the name of love for humanity and the necessity of their mission, with such clarity of arguments and such a sense of justice...

Direction - remarks
The direction of the performance by Gerasimos Davaris does not follow the steps of a realistic representation of space and time. What it tries to do is, through the use of symbolism, convey the internal desolation that exists within the speech of the Great Hierophant, and to highlight the historical consequences of this speech, using integrated video projection.
In the performance, there are excerpts from Dante's Divine Comedy, as well as excerpts from anatomy texts, in order to enhance the image of the dehumanization of modern societies.
