On Monday, February 13th 2023, the Hermionian Theater Group presents for the first time in Nafplio the play "Sleeping Chalepas...the mad Saint". An original performance by Angelos Andreopoulos, directed by Alexandros Liakopoulos, with actor Giorgis Kontopodis in the role of Yannoulis Chalepas.
The work is presented for the first time in Greece and deals with the life of the great Greek sculptor Yannoulis Chalepas. Starting while he is confined in the psychiatric hospital of Corfu, where through the constant "journeys" of his mind, we see his whole life, the blessed Tinos, the domineering mother and the "typical" father, the brothers and the great love of his life... But more than that, we see the inspiration, the frenzy of creation... to get to his important works, his dreams, his nightmares and to come to the final question: what is worth more, one to be mad ("salos", loony) and intelligent or normal and just… human?
Through the room of Giannoulis Halepas in the psychiatric hospital, we travel back and forth his entire life and its important milestones. Nevertheless, the work is not a life-biography, but an in-depth analysis of the psychosynthesis of this schizophrenicly intelligent artist or perhaps…also of the psyche of every intelligent artist (see Fleury Dantonakis, Vincent Van Gong, Georgios Vizyinos...) - finally an artist's path to sainthood...

Did you know that?
Yannoulis Chalepas (August 14th 1851 – September 15th 1938) was a Greek sculptor and a significant figure of Modern Greek art -born in Pyrgos, on the island of Tinos, from a family of marble hewers. The actor of the play is depicted in the photograph above, embracing the famous Sleeping Female Figure; probably the best known of the sculptor's works (1877), at the Tomb of the young Sofia Afentaki, situated at First Cemetery of Athens.
The show is co-organized by the Hermionian Theater Group and the Municipal & Cultural Organization of Nafplio.
The Hermionian Theater Group is a Civic, Non-Profit Group of Amateurs actors. It appeared on the cultural map of the Prefecture of Argolis and the province of Ermioni in April 2009, aiming to promote and cultivate the art of theater.
