Alkioni wine bar
At the end of that Friday full of "musts", all I needed was good company and good wine. And I couldn't have found a better place to be, than in Alkioni wine bar.
It wasn't but a few minutes into my stay at this cozy hangout in town, and I already felt like all worries had become a distant past. Walking through the door, I found myself in front of a place that celebrates the truth of wine without shouting it, with shelves full of labels both familiar and unfamiliar, relaxed lighting and music, warm décor, but most importantly, people who understand with just one look what you need.
The wine bar you never knew existed
If you're tired of pretentious, staged and unnecessarily pretentious wine bars, if you are a wine lover but not necessarily a wine connoisseur, if you believe that wine is much more than a drink, then come here.
"What wine do you like?" I was asked, when I sat down at my table. "Probably white", I replied without the slightest hint of certainty. And soon I had a glass in front of me; red wine. "Try this and tell us what you think", they said.
And the first glass led to the second and the second to the third, with tasty side dishes arriving at the table, emptied and refilled like the glasses. And our spirits relaxed sip by sip, and the conversation traveled to blessed parts of Greece, to wineries and small producers I'd never heard of before, but it was like meeting them, as their passion burst through my glass and their stories intertwined with the tannins and my own mood of now.
The aftertaste of truth
As I tasted and re-tasted wines, I realised that the people at the Alkioni Wine Bar had made me part of a wine tasting process, not one where you have to sign up or pay a premium, but as a mystique of sensations and revelations.
Sometimes the earth, sometimes the herbs, the fruit or the smoke, came to play a leading role on my palate, as if to say "Close your eyes and let yourself go". And that's how a rich Agiorgitiko can lead you to small confessions, love stories and passions, and an intense Syrah can make you see life from a different perspective.
If you ask me what wine is for me, I would answer "a journey". A journey of the mind to memories that were hidden and blurred, a journey to new places, a journey that you start alone and end with a great company that laughs, shares, is moved, philosophizes, appreciates the simple and the human.
One night, when we meet in Alkioni, when we get to know each other and drink to our health, I'd like you to tell me the truth. The one that is only hidden in wine, in vino veritas.
