Cruise to Spetses - "Armata" celebration
Every year, the second week of September is dedicated to festivities, combining the celebration of "Panagia Armata" and the anniversary of the Naval Battle of Spetses island, which took place on September 8th 1822, between the Spetsiots and Lady-Admiral Laskarina Bouboulina against the Turkish Armada.
The Naval Battle of Spetses, recorded as one of the most important events of the Revolution of 1821, was the culmination of the heroism of the people of Spetses. The Spetsiots dedicated their victory to the Virgin Mary (Panagia) and built the chapel of "Panagia Armata" because, according to tradition, She helped the Greeks defeat the Turkish fleet. This unexpected Greek victory secured the siege of Nafplio and led to its liberation by the rebelled Greeks.
On the second Saturday of September, the representation of the historic naval battle takes place, with the firing-up of the effigy of the Turkish flagship, while simultaneously the historical events are narrated and the show ends with an impressive display of fireworks and firecrackers.
