"Gyro-komeio" Grill is located in a particular corner building, on a very central spot at Sidiras Merarchias street. Open from July 2011, there is no way that you pass from there or find yourself at Kapodistrias's Square not noticing it. Original Greek “souvlaki” and doner kebab are the basics, that you should definitely try.
The name of it is quite amusing, don't you think? A clever wordplay between the circle (in Greek otherwise is called "gyros"), old age and the nursing home (pronounced in Greek "yirokomeio"), which reveals... audacity.
A "gyro" around the corner
Gyro-komeio is located at a corner spot, in a very good location on Sidiras Merarhias Street. It's been here since July '11 when it opened, and there's no chance you'll pass by there or be at Kapodistria Square without noticing it. At first glance, it gives you an American vibe. Like a burger joint, that landed from Manhattan in Nafplio and transformed into a postmodern souvlaki place. And the first impression always counts.
Your hangout spot
The decoration, fresh, cheerful, modern, carefully curated by the owner's mother, uplifts your mood - and whets your appetite. Not just for eating, but also for sitting and enjoying a bit longer. To make it your own haven. To come here when you're hungry, but also when you want to meet up with your friends. Here, you'll see all ages: little kids coming on their bicycles, middle and high school kids on their tentative, carefree outings, families with children, couples, and even elderly individuals making this their Sunday outing.
Menu catalog of bare temptation
I sit and gaze at my table. On its open wood, cheerful paper placemats are spread out, with a pop mood: "fresh every day" reads one, depicting a salad, "local products" on another where a tomato takes center stage, "juicy greek meat" a little further down, and you understand what it signifies. Whatever you eat here comes from local suppliers. The quality of the meat is exceptional, the pita bread is "made from dough, flattened so you don't bloat," the French fries are fresh - it's worth waiting a little longer for them to cook! Just like the burger, which is grilled on the spot. Besides the souvlaki, they also make an exquisite skewered feast with cheeses and peppers, a deliciously juicy beef burger, crispy grilled chicken, finger-licking ribs, homemade cheese croquettes, and of course, salads - the chef's, Caesar's, green with chicken, for those who think summer is just around the corner...
Like a short film
Through the windows that surround -as if embracing- the establishment, the lights of passing cars and the square spread sweetly. The movement of the city this Tuesday doesn't say much, yet the place's tables are filled with people; at the grill, the staff doesn't stop serving, the cash register keeps printing receipts constantly. Time passes and around me the scene changes, like in a movie. It's as if I am the only stable spot, and if you put the frames on fast forward, the couches and tables along the wall fill and empty, a group comes and goes at the table next to me, the younger ones sit on the high stools at the small tables facing outside, friends and acquaintances arrive, order, wait, and leave for home. It's time for me to leave too. I take the delivery brochure with me. In a couple of hours, I'll probably need it again (who said that an "exohiko" pork is too heavy for an evening meal?)...
Did you know that?
During the first week the place opened, they offered free souvlaki, to test which meat supplier the public prefers! The tastiest poll I've ever heard of!
They provide delivery within and outside Nafplio, with the corresponding minimum order.
In the summer, Gyro-komeio takes out the tables and sets them up in the square.
Street Food, souvlaki, and grilled dishes, kebabs, steaks, hamburgers, skewered pork, chicken skewers.
