If your ideal stay in Nafplio means central location, old town charm, great views and a warm service, then Porto Nafplio is definitely the hotel that will win your heart.
I take some time before my appointment with Yiannis to lazily stroll through the picturesque alleys of the old town, which no matter how many times I see them, I can never get enough of their unparalleled beauty. The morning sunshine sweetly dresses my stroll along Vassileos Othonos with its restored mansions. I arrive at number 47, with the city's characteristic fuchsia bougainvillea adding color and romance to the building, and two olive trees in large pots standing like vigilant sentinels of Porto Nafplio's burgundy main entrance.
I am greeted with a smile at the reception and a few steps take me to the bright breakfast area, which has its own door looking out over Philellinon Square, the towering palm trees, the church of Agios Nikolaos, the sea and the imposing Bourtzi. It is an elegant neighborhood with beautifully restored buildings that give you the feeling of an inspired theatrical setting.
I make no secret of my fondness for this small, precious part of the city, and talking to John it is clear that this family has taken it over with the intention of giving it a new lease of life. I confess to him that I stayed in one of the hotel rooms many years ago and now look forward to seeing the newly renovated rooms.
Rooms with a view
When a hotel is lucky enough to be located in such an idyllic spot, I think that the decoration comes as a complement to highlight it. It seems that John agrees with this notion, as I notice the abstract style in the rooms, with the intimacy of the wood on the floors, the touches of color on the walls behind the beds and the black and white prints, giving the space the glamour of the past.
Whichever room you choose, from a single room to a suite, you can be sure that the view when you wake up in the morning and step out onto your private terrace will be exceptional. "I envied the big windows in my life, never the big houses" says Yannis Ritsos, and here the poet's verse finds its ultimate interpretation.
If you are travelling alone or have come to the city on business and your choice is a single room, you will welcome each day by looking at the sea, Bourtzi, the harbor with the sailing boats and the picturesque alleys.
In the double rooms you have two choices, either a room with a king-size bed or with two single beds. In both cases, you will be charmed by the view from your veranda to the small square of Agios Nikolaos, Philellinon Square, Acronafplia, the historic city clock and Palamidi.
And while all the rooms are spotlessly clean and have the most essentials for a comfortable and relaxing stay, I can't help but praise the deluxe suite that spreads over 60 sq.m., ideal for families or groups, as it can comfortably accommodate up to 4 people (or 5 with the addition of a cot). With a king-size bed and a separate living area, with two sofas (which become beds), a relaxation corner and a bright bathroom, it is simply unique. The suite's two spacious terraces have dreamy views, as one overlooks the historic Acronauplia, the Clock and the Palamidi Castle, and the other overlooks Bourtzi, the harbor and the blue sea and sky.
Mum's breakfast
Mum's breakfast
In the bright breakfast area, you can enjoy the view of Agios Nikolaos Square and the palm trees, as you sit comfortably on the leather chairs and dark tables. But the truth is, those who come to Porto Nafplio do appreciate the magnificent views, but what they remember is the hotel's traditional, home-cooked breakfast. Apart from the essentials of a breakfast, the sweet Mrs. Elina, depending on the mood of the day, makes with her hands traditional, motherly recipes, such as spinach pie, cheese bread, spinach soufflé, but also modern versions of breakfast snacks that are becoming a hit, such as avocado with egg and spring onion, pesto and mozzarella rolls, individual dumplings and overnight oats. Of course, the hotel's breakfast does not lack handmade desserts, such as lemon sweets, apple pie, pasta flora, but also its homemade jams, such as orange, strawberry, fig. What better way to start your day in Nafplio, filling up on energy for your walks around town and your sightseeing tours?
