On Sunday, November 19th 2023 in Nafplio, we have the opportunity to explore for one hour an interesting historical route within the new city. It is an original Participative Historical Walk, with a landscape reading and storytelling about the district called "Sinikismos" or New Byzantium ("Neo Vyzantio") in Nafplio.
This involves a parallel action, in the presentation of the ongoing artistic work of Vasiliki Sifostratoudaki, in an attempt to interpret the landscape of the "Sinikismos" (settlement) district of Nafplio. It takes place within the framework of the artistic project ‘"Pazari’" at the Poème design and fine arts space in Nafplio.
On this historical route, that will be introduced by the curator of the "Pazari" exhibition, Mr. Dimitris Papachristos and the invited artist Mrs. Vasiliki Sifostratoudaki, the Surveyor Engineer Mr. Charalambos Antoniadis will speak to us, presenting archival material he has created in relation to the creation of the "Sinikismos".
The Route
The route that will be followed includes significant landmarks, such as the former industrial complex of "Kyknos" canning company, preserved refugee residences, the Square of Agios Konstantinos, and the presentation of information regarding tree planting in the area. Throughout the duration of the walk, we will meet the residents of the area, who will narrate their own stories about the place, co-creating a new archive for local history.
"Portraits of Trees, Notes on History"
Who can speak about history? Who can tell its stories? What if we could read out loud our landscape what stories would make up? Artist Vasiliki Sifostratoudaki, starting from her own family story, looks at the landscape as the map of history. It collects stories from the descendants of the people, who planted the trees in areas established during the settlement of refugees, after the exchange of populations and the consolidation of the areas between Greece and Turkey. With 'Portraits of Trees, Notes on History' she tells their stories and the History we share.
