Did you know that?
The square and the church of Saint Constantine and Helen, in the area known as New Byzantium in Nafplio, was actually a refugee neighborhood in the past, where the first refugee houses were built in 1929, to provide permanent shelter for the numerous refugees of the Asia Minor catastrophe of 1922. This fertile estate of approximately 50 acres was a donation made by Mrs. Anna, the widow of Mr. Iatros, to the Greek state.
In addition to the residences, the initial plan also included the construction of a Municipal School and a Church. According to testimonies, the refugees of the settlement built the church of Saints Constantine and Helen with their own hands (1950-1961).
